Lessons from a chilli plant

In January I planted a few chilli seeds into a pot that was once home to parsley.

As much as I wanted the parsley, because it was not right in front of me, it suffered from neglect. The parsley had long withered and died because I kept it outside and always forgot to water it.

In January I planted a few chilli seeds into a pot that was once home to parsley.

As much as I wanted parsley, because it was not right in front of me, it suffered from neglect. The parsley withered and died because I kept it outside and always forgot to water it.

I was not going to make the same mistake again. Instead of putting the pot outside, I placed it on the bench in the kitchen – front and centre. Whenever I make a cuppa, dinner or washed the dishes, the pot is right there, demanding my attention.

It took weeks for the seeds to sprout. With this lack of action, I could be forgiven for losing interest in the chilli seeds. No. Every day, I watered the soil and turned the pot so every corner received sunlight. I was not going to lose hope because of lack of results.

Sometime late January, I noticed a change. The seeds had burst open, giving me a snippet of green. Ah ha…results!

Over the coming months, my four chilli plants are slowly but surely growing in size. They are healthy and vibrant…thanks to my attention and dedication.

So…what’s that got to do with PR?

EVERYTHING!

I’ve worked with people who have pulled the plug on their campaigns after a month, two months, and three months. They’ve told me they are not seeing results. Nothing is happening. No return on their investment. Why are they not famous yet? Why are their stories not getting traction?

Then I think about my chilli plant. I made sure it had the right foundations – good soil, sunlight and water. I paid attention to it, making sure every day I was doing something to help it grow.

My chilli plants are not unlike your business or raising your profile. Everything starts from a seed, an idea, a thought. It takes time, energy, mistakes, persistence and determination to keep it growing. Nothing happens overnight. It takes time.

You have to be prepared to put in the hard yards and to not expect results straight away. Of course, immediate results do happen but in my experience, it does take time to be a superstar.

Every week, work on your content, building relations with journalists/bloggers/podcasters etc, look for speaking opportunities, places to share your expertise. Every month, look at what you have done, what worked, what didn’t, adapt and change. If you keep providing great content, being accessible and working on being noticed, you will. It may not happen overnight but it will happen.

If you are doing your own marketing/PR or paying someone to do it for you, remember there are no overnight successes. Even those that appear to have popped out of nowhere, have put in the hard yards. The biggest mistake you can make is to give up, pull the plug and not keep going… success is around the corner.

After seven months, I had had hoped for some chillies. I am not going to throw out the plant because it has not delivered more quickly. I will keep being patient and watering the plants.
